For flatmates Adityam Tyagi and Nitish Tandon, Monday was supposed to be a relaxing day, as they were on leave from work. Both employed by private companies in Noida, they had just woken up when they heard a commotion outside their 10th floor rented accommodation at Noida’s Sector 74. While Nitish did not pay much heed to the noise and went to brush his teeth, Adityam peeped outside their balcony to find out what was happening.
What he saw chilled him to the bones. He saw their neighbour hanging from the balcony of the 12th floor common passage, about to jump. What Adityam did next saved the man’s life.
As he called for Nitish, his flatmate – with a brush in his mouth – followed Adityam up the two floors. On reaching the spot from where the man was hanging, Adityam pulled him back with both hands while Nitish pulled him up by his legs, taking the man to safety.
Nitish (29), who works with an insurance company based in the UK, said, “Moments after we rescued him, he started crying in our arms.” Adityam and Nitish share their 3 BHK flat with three other men, all in the 25 to 29 age group.
Adityam (26), an app developer with Accenture, said, “We woke up around 10 am and were chatting… Suddenly, we heard people screaming… I went to the balcony and saw a lot of people standing on the ground and a few taking videos. When I looked up, all I saw was two legs hanging in the air… I screamed for Nitish and he followed me.”
“He was our age and heavily built… I initially thought of grabbing him all by myself but realised that it won’t be easy and he could slip. I asked Nitish to hold his legs and we pulled him up,” he added.
Hours later, the man’s family reached the society and took him home. “His parents could not stop thanking us. They kept calling us his saviors,” said Nitish.
Their phones have not stopped ringing since morning. “We are being called the ‘red T-shirt guy’ and the ‘guy with the toothbrush’,” said Adityam.
