Coronation Street legend ‘really proud’ as family update supported by co-stars
Coronation Street legend Andy Whyment has said he’s ‘really proud’ as he shared a milestone moment for one of his children, to support from his co-stars.
The actor is famed for playing the loveable Kirk Sutherland in the ITV soap, having officially taken on the role back in 2000.
However, while he has spent 25 years in the role, he does have two other uncredited Corrie appearances under his belt, as he actually appeared in the show in 1990 and 1997 and was just referred to as Mark.
But away from his Corrie alter-ego, during his time on-screen, Andy has grew his family, sharing son Tom and daughter Hollie with his wife, Nichola.
The soap star often shares updates on what the Whyment’s are up to, from family cruises to dinners out in and around Manchester.
In his latest update, Andy revealed that eldest child Tom had officially come to the end of his school years as he prepares for pastures new.
He shared a snap of them together on Instagram on Tuesday (June 17), alsongside the caption: “School’s out for @tomwhyment. Really proud of the young man you’ve become son and really looking forward to seeing you move on to the next chapter of your life.”
Andy’s Corrie co-stars were quick to respond. Sally Dynevor, who plays Weatherfield icon Sally Metcalfe, said: “Wow,” as Andy responded: “I still remember his first day at primary school like it was yesterday Sal.”
On-screen sister, Maria Windass star Samia Longchambon commented: “Well done Tom!!” Meanwhile,. Alan Halsall, who plays Tyrone Dobbs, commented on how tall Andy’s son is as he joked: “He is never ever standing next to me ever again.”
In response, Andy laughed: “I know bro it’s madness how tall he is now.” But Alan also added: “Well done Tom, top man.”
Andy’s I’m A Celebrity pal Myleene Klass also shared: “And Good job Papa,” to which Andy responded with a number of red heart emojis.
It comes after Andy shared his upset over his co-star’s exit from Corrie. Having attended Colson Smith’s leaving party back in March, as he bowed out of the show as Craig Tinker after 14 years, Andy took to Instagram with a picture of the pair.
Alongside the post, he admitted: “I’ve seen a lot of people leave the show over the 24 years I’ve been there but I can honestly say this one has hit me so hard.
“I’ve watched you grow from the chubby ginger kid with Daryl the rat when you were 12 years of age to the caring loving man you are today, I know we won’t be working together anymore but I’ll always be here as a friend.”
He added: “Go out there and smash it as I know you will, but I as will millions of people miss PC Craig Tinker.” Colson responded by sharing: “Nothing but love and respect Andy. The perfect way for it to end!”
